Event Details

Presented as part of a two-month exploration into consumerism and cultural expression in the Bay Area, Root Division’s front gallery will feature, Recast, a solo exhibition of new works by artist Cathy Lu. An exploration of how Eastern art imagery is seen and understood in the US, the ceramic based sculptures are playful alterations of objects we associate with East Asian culture. Referencing iconography from places like the Asian Art Museum, Chinatown trinket shops and nail salons, Lu questions the assumptions we make about the authenticity of culture and its objects and our relationship to contemporary identity.

Root Division’s rear gallery will feature a guest curated group exhibition by Michael Arcega entitled, Bizarre Bazaar exploring the intersection of cultures and objects within a strange global economic system. The works in this show explore the unexpected connections between commerce, the fetish commodity, and the collapse that is often built into the dystopic capitalist system.
