Event Details

SOMArts’ beloved Día de los Muertos curator and pioneer of the Chicano arts movement, René Yañez, passed away on May 29, leaving a huge hole in the hearts of many in the Bay Area.

To offer space to grieve together and share memories of René’s unparalleled work in the community, SOMArts will host a memorial with René’s friends and family members on Sunday, July 8 from 1 – 4 pm. All are welcome to honor René at this community memorial with performance tributes, refreshments, and a community altar. René’s artwork will be on view, and the Great Tortilla Conspiracy will print René-themed tortillas for guests. Please bring memories to share and items to contribute to the altar.

René’s family has requested that SOMArts establish a memorial fund in his honor. All proceeds from this fund will be dedicated entirely to continuing René’s legacy of hospitality, beauty and creativity in SOMArts’ garden. Help us honor René by contributing to the memorial fund.
