Stanford Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education founder and director, Dr. James Doty, will ask scientist and Buddhist monk, Matthieu Ricard, about his life’s work and what role compassion may have played. This event is an hour-long dialogue followed by questions from the audience.

Born in France in 1946, Matthieu Ricard is a Buddhist monk who left a career in cellular genetics to study Buddhism in the Himalayas over 45 years ago. As a trained scientist and Buddhist monk, he is uniquely positioned in the dialogue between East and West. He is an international best-selling author and a prominent speaker on the world stage, celebrated at the World Economic Forum at Davos and at TED where over four million people have viewed his talk on happiness. He also founded Karuna-Shechen, which provides health care, education, and social services for the under-served people of India, Nepal, and Tibet.

Altruism: The Power of Compassion to Change Yourself and the World is Matthieu Ricard’s new masterwork presenting a global vision based on decades personal experience and insight, a roadmap for the 21st century.

About his book: Ricard demonstrates how altruism is not an abstract ideal, but an essential dimension of our nature that everyone can cultivate. He explains how it is the vital thread that can answer the main challenges of our time: economic inequality, life satisfaction, and environmental sustainability. Altruism was a bestseller in France and will be published in the U.S. on June 2, 2015, by Little Brown.

Registration is required for access to seating before the event starts. Non-registrants are still welcome to come. Depending on space, any available seats will offered on a first-come, first-serve basis once the event begins.
