Join the ACLU – San Francisco Chapter for its annual panel event, this year on decarceration and public safety in San Francisco. In addition to hearing from expert guest speakers and learning how to organize around these issues, the event will also be a great opportunity to connect with local activists and ACLU SF chapter members.

“Public safety” has often been used to justify increasing police presence in communities of color, prosecuting quality of life offenses, and continuing the crisis of mass incarceration. After decades of policies reinforcing increased interactions with the criminal justice system, it is clear that these policies are not working. Join the San Francisco chapter of the ACLU and its guest panelists as we explore how alternatives to policing and incarceration are ultimately more effective ways to promote public safety for all of us.

Light dinner and refreshments will be provided. RSVPing ensures that we’ll have food and beverages for everyone.

TRANSIT & PARKING: The venue is 0.1 miles from the 16th Street Mission BART Station.
Street parking is limited on and around Valencia. There’s a parking garage at 16th & Hoff Streets.

ACCESSIBILITY: The venue has an ADA accessible bathroom and a small back room that’s available for family/kid use.

PANELISTS
Speakers include representatives from:
– The Coalition on Homelessness, which organizes homeless people and frontline service providers in creating permanent solutions to homelessness while protecting the human rights of those forced to remain on the streets
– The League of Women Voters San Francisco, which in addition to its civic engagement and voter education focus is currently running a project on how San Franciscans can observe and push for police transparency at SFPD meetings
– The ACLU Northern California, which worked on the recently passed police use-of-force bill known as The California Act to Save Lives and continues to advocate for other criminal justice legislation
