Event Details

San Francisco Public Virtual Library presents Lewis Gordon and Justin Desmangles will discuss the creative relationship between the radical movement within Afro-American classical music known as Free Jazz and the parallel development of the Black Power movement in international politics.

Jazz, the most original and pervasively influential art form of the last hundred years, was created by African Americans. Within that art form emerged Free Jazz, its most controversial emanation. Controversial in part because Free Jazz has historically closely aligned itself with revolutionary struggle among Blacks internationally. Join us for what promises to be a vibrant, explosive discussion of aesthetics, philosophy, and the practice of freedom.
