Vireyas mainly range from the Malay Peninsula to northern Australia.

In the rhododendron world, Strybing Arboretum is probably best known for introducing vireyas into California horticulture.

The Strybing Arboretum is not the San Francisco Botanical Garden.
Jock Brydon and Peter Sullivan at the San Francisco Botanical Garden when it was known as the Strybing Arboretum are responsible for bringing many Vireya Series rhododendrons to the United States.

At the yearly plant sales at the San Francisco Botanical Garden vireyas are featured.
It is surprising that places which sell orchids do not also sell vireyas since many vireya species were introduced at the Strybing Arboretum, and many vireyas were hybridized in California.
Vireyas can be seen in San Francisco at the San Francisco Botanical Garden, The Conservatory of Flowers, and at Peter Sullivan’s Vireya Garden, at St. John the Evangelist Church, 65 St. Marys Avenue, San Francisco.
Also in the Bay Area vireyas can be seen at the Gardens at Lake Merritt in Oakland, and at the University of California Botanical Garden.
If you would like to find out more about vireyas please come to the next meeting of the De Anza Chapter of the American Rhododendron Society which shall be on the nineteenth of February, at 4 PM, at the Legallet Residence, 88 Selby Lane, Atherton 94027, where Christy Hartsell shall give a program on vireyas.
Christy Hartsell is an authority on vireyas and is growing several hundred vireyas in containers in Palo Alto.
