First Friday Fiesta: Free Engaging Performances | San Jose

The notable First Friday Fiesta Series at MACLA brings several of the Bay Area’s most prominent Latin American music and dance companies to MACLA’s Castellano Playhouse in the heart of Downtown San José for an evening of free, educational, and engaging performances.

The series is presented by MACLA during the monthly SoFA District Art Walk. This event takes place on the 1st Friday of each month.

Gabriel Navia & Sulkary emanate passion and soul in their music.

  • Gabriel Navia is a Latin Grammy nominated guitarist, composer and producer whose stylistic range is breathtaking from latin-based Carlos Santana and Alejandro Sanz to jazz-flamenco world-fusion pioneers Al di Meola, John McLaughlin, Paco de Lucia, and Vicente Amigo.
  • Sulkary Valverde is one of the greatest new voices of Cuba. Her voice is deep and soulful — her precision and outstanding ear enable her to easily sing a story. Her improvisational skills will take you on a voyage from Cuba to Africa with a Spanish connection.

Both artists have toured extensively throughout the United States, Europe, Asia and South America and have shared stages with the San Francisco Symphony, Santana, Steve Miller, Chuchito Valdes, Buena Vista Social Club, Eliades Ochoa, Havana D’ Primera, Eddy Navia, Sukay, Savia Andina, Los Kjarkas and more.
