Event Details

The Goethe-Institut San Francisco, the Kadist Art Foundation, and J&L Books present the documentary “Kippenberger: The Film” by Jörg Kobel at the Kadist Art Foundation. The film is about the painter and installation artist Martin Kippenberger.

The film screening will be followed by a conversation with Martin Kippenberger’s sister Susanne. She will introduce her book “Kippenberger: The Artist and His Families” which was published in English in 2011 and is the first English-language biography of this playful and provocative artist.

About Kippenberger: In art and in life, Martin Kippenberger always chose the extreme. In her biographical portrait Susanne Kippenberger draws a picture of her brother familiar to those who knew him. The author describes the bogey of the middle classes, the family man, the self made man, and the provocateur. An artist who always wanted to control his fame and impact. Martin Kippenberger’s greatest fear was boredom and routine, yet he needed rituals. He worked himself to death for his creation, the art. An artist, whose desire for new places and new projects was as great as his longing for home and family. An enfant terrible, for whom childhood never ended.
