Event Details

Join us Saturday May 27, 1 to 3 pm at Presidio Tunnel Tops for Music Makers: Bands Behind Barbed Wire, a free jazz concert featuring the Akira Tana Ensemble with Kim Nalley and Taiko master Jimi Nakagawa. They’ll perform the music of legendary Nisei jazz musician George Yoshida.

Inspired by the big band swing of Count Basie and Duke Ellington, drummer Yoshida and his fellow “Music Makers” band defined their own American identity through jazz music, using its power to cope with their detention behind barbwire of the Japanese internment camp at Poston, Arizona in 1936.

Presented by the National Japanese American Historical Society, this Memorial Day Weekend event is in conjunction with Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month. Bring friends and family, your picnic gear and your goza (lawn mat), and experience this special performance as the Akira Tana Ensemble brings Yoshida’s musical tale to life.
