Event Details

The de Young Museum hosts its weekly “Friday Nights at the de Young” with free events all throughout the public areas of the museum.

Although you still have to pay to get into the galleries, if you just want to peruse the public areas (which are free and open to the public) you’ll enjoy a sampling of Peet’s coffee’s and teas, hear live music from Tango No. 9,  take a hands-on art class, take a lecture about Gauguin and much more.

Le Café Peetnik
6:00–8:30 p.m.
Piazzoni Murals Room
Enjoy a sampling of select signature Peet’s coffees & teas, and be entertained by tableaux vivants featuring artists Berthe Morisot (Peggy Gyulai), Vincent van Gogh (Jeremy Sutton), Henri Toulouse-Lautrec (Valentine), and Paul Gauguin (Marius Starkey).

Live music by Tango No. 9
6:30–8:30 p.m.
Wilsey Court
Tango No. 9 brings its synthesis of old-school, nuevo, and contemporary tango in a program that may jiggle some of the seats loose from their moorings, as well as provide a feast for the ears.

Lecture: “Gauguin’s Baudelairean Dream”
7:00 p.m.
Koret Auditorium
Professor James Housefield, scholar of Modern French art, University of California at Davis, discusses “Gauguin’s Baudelairean Dream.” Paul Gauguin’s paintings transport viewers to worlds of mystery, imagination, and dreams. This illustrated lecture examines how these connect to the literary dreams of the authors that Gauguin, Van Gogh, and their friends enjoyed, specifically the writing of Charles Baudelaire.

Hands-on art making for everyone
6:00–8:30 p.m.
Wilsey Court
Join Madamoiselle Kim for another exciting hands-on art making project. Create your own mini art palette accessories.
