There is a type of rhododendron which makes a superb container plant, and even performs greatly when pot bound, since many species are epiphytes in nature.

In the Bay Area, vireyas can be seen at the Southeast Asia Cloud Forest area of the San Francisco Botanical Garden, at Peter Sullivan’s Vireya Garden at St. John the Evangelist Church, 65 St. Marys Avenue, San Francisco, the Vireya Garden of the Gardens at Lake Merritt in Oakland, and at the Australasia area of the University of California Botanical Garden.
On Wednesday January 21, 2025 at 4 PM, at the Legallet Residence, 88 Selby Lane, Atherton 94027, the De Anza Chapter of the American Rhododendron Society shall have a program by Christy Hatrsell on vireya rhododendrons.
Christy, who lives in Palo Alto, grows several hundred vireyas in containers.
