*What is a tianguis? (prounounced tyahng-gees)

The word tianguis comes from the Nahuatl word tiyānquiztli, meaning “open-air market” or “marketplace.” Similar to a flea market or farmers market, tianguis are outdoor marketplaces often held on a regular day of the week.

Rooted in Indigenous traditions, they have existed across Latin America for centuries as spaces where vendors gather to sell food, clothing, handmade goods, and more. Beyond economic hubs, tianguis are places for community gathering, where people come together to share culture, exchange goods, and connect with neighbors.
