Friday Nights at the de Young | Fall 2018

One of San Francisco’s most celebrated after-hours museum events returns for a fall season of 2018.

These nine Friday Nights feature free admission to the main-level galleries highlighted by a reinterpretation of contemporary art in their permanent collection and new acquisitions called Specters of Disruption. In addition, Friday Nights will offer reduced-price tickets of $14 to the exhibition Contemporary Muslim Fashions from 6–8:30 pm.

Through social-media moments and in-person dialogue, visitors can engage and commune with the art and with one another in a warm and welcoming setting. Enjoy specialty drinks and mocktails, coffees, teas, and snacks. Bring your friends. Strike a pose at the selfie wall. Listen to music. Make art. Activities take place from 6–8:30 pm.

Schedule | Friday, September 27, 2013

  • 6-8:45 pm: Closing Reception: “Patterns,” by Artist-in-Residence Jenny E. Balisle – Kimball Education Gallery
Artist Jenny E. Balisle invites visitors to engage in an exploration of pattern through the de Young’s artwork, architecture, and park setting. Balisle’s practice incorporates work in three separate media: abstract paintings, pen and ink drawings, and sculptural installations made from heated acrylic sheets. These pieces are conceptually linked by an interest in dichotomous relationships—the simple and the complex, the beautiful and the grotesque, micro and macro perspectives, and natural and man-made environments. As Artist-in-Residence she will investigate the museum’s incredible diversity of collections inside and out during the month of September.
  • 6:30–8:30 pm: Live Music and Dance by the Musical Art Quintet – Wilsey Court
The Musical Art Quintet presents Dancing in Your Dreams, performed with special guests Edgardo Cambon and Harvey Wainapel, as well as dancers Andrea Fuchilieri, Guillermo García, Tiani Frias, Alejandro Urgell, and others.
  • 6:30-8:30 pm: Film Screening: La Piedra Ausente (The Absent Stone) – Koret Auditorium
La Piedra Ausente (The Absent Stone) (Dir: Sandra Rozental and Jesse Lerner, 2012, 80 min., in Spanish with English subtitles), presented in partnership with the SF Latino Film Festival and Consulate General of Mexico in San Francisco. Directors Sandra Rozental and Jesse Lerner will host a question-and-answer session following the film.
