The de Young Museum hosts a yearlong series celebrating Street Art San Francisco: Mission Muralismo with a special Friday night free event celebrating female artists in the Mission which features lectures, live Pakistani music, art projections and a one-night-only live painting of an epic women’s collaborative mural.

About Friday Nights at the de Young The museum stays open late and hosts all sorts of interesting events, concerts, art projects and lectures. Although regular admission prices still apply to visit the museum’s galleries, all of the events below are in the public spaces of the museum are completely free and open to the public

The evening will feature work of dozens of outstanding artists including Mujeres Muralistas, Maestrapeace, Sebastiana Pastor, Ruby Neri, Carolyn Castaño, Ester Hernandez, Amanda Lynn, Swoon, Margaret Kilgallen, Megan Wilson, Julie Murray, Jocelyn Superstar and Isis Rodriguez.

Live music of Pakistan by Riffat Sultana

Riffat Sultana’s stunning vocals have been recorded for numerous labels, including Ark 21/Universal, Triloka/Mercury, Hearts of Space, City of Tribes, 6 Degrees, and XDot25. Musicians joining Riffat in this performance include Shiraz Ali Khan, Riffat’s husband and producer, who produces a beautiful 12-string guitar accompaniment; and Gurdeep Singh a powerful tabla and dhole player, who gives an authentic, grooving Punjabi style and sound. The group performs a wide variety of traditional and modern material from Pakistan and India, including, sufi, geet, ghazal, filmi, qawwali, and light classical.

Piazzoni Murals Room
A one-time-only epic women’s collaborative mural
will be created as a live-action painting involving dozens of outstanding women artists who work in the Mission. The public will be able to observe—in the tradition of Diego Rivera’s public painting for the 1939 World’s Fair on Treasure Island—a work come to life and the power of individual styles coming together in an inspired visual chorus.
