Event Details

This presentation explores the storied history of San Francisco’s legacy hotels and their significance to the city over time. Writer and historian Peter Devine will tell the stories of these historic and luxurious hotels: the Mark Hopkins, the Fairmont, the Saint Francis, the Sir Francis Drake, the Clift, and the Palace. Special guest concierges will share colorful stories of famous guests, amusing incidents, and “behind-the-wall” adventures only a concierge would know. Ron Henggeler, Longtime waiter at the Huntington Hotel’s Big Four restaurant, will share entertaining anecdotes and legends collected over his decades of experience.

San Francisco’s legacy hotels are a tight-knit community of venerable establishments, each with its own perspective about food, beverages, and the hospitality industry. Join us for an evening of outstanding storytelling, local legends, and history most people never know. A special San-Francisco-themed cocktail will be available for purchase, with proceeds benefitting the San Francisco Historical Society. This presentation is part of the Clift Hotel’s Making History Fun Again series.

Peter Merle Devine, a fifth generation San Franciscan, is descended from the Vasserot-Merle, Beretta, Flavin, Fogarty, and Devine families who arrived in SF in the early 1850s. Peter studied at USF, American Conservatory Theatre, Stanford, and UC Berkeley, is an award-winning Theatre Director & English Teacher (52 years), and received national recognition on the 2015 Tony Awards and from President Clinton.
