Remember the Night (1940) is the holiday classic you may not have in your annual viewing rotation, but should. Barbara Stanwyck stars as a shop-lifting New Yorker who gets whisked to Fred MacMurray’s Indiana home when he realizes he’s responsible for her being in jail during Christmas, and venerable character actors Beulah Bondi and Sterling Holloway convince her there’s no place like home.
A warm and sharp-witted script by Preston Sturges and deft direction by Mitchell Leisen serve up a true holiday treat. Screened courtesy of Universal Studios.
