Event Details

In collaboration with percussionist Jim Kassis and hip-hop producer Kristopher Grant, Quadre’s four horn soloists virtuosically bring to life moving, musical portraits inspired by the unhoused community.

Quadre – The Voice of Four Horns commissioned nationally acclaimed composers Nina Shekhar and Benjamin Shirley to create two stunning companion pieces, “Recovery Swap” and “Steglitz” both set for horn quartet and electronics. Ben’s perspective was particularly meaningful for this program as he spent 26 months living at the Midnight Mission, a homeless shelter in Skid Row in downtown Los Angeles. The two pieces work in tandem to musically explore the relationship between our identities and sense of home.

Compelling art and words from Allied Artists West and Monday Night Poets reflecting the powerfully uplifting work by Quadre’s local engagement partners – LifeMoves, Bill Wilson Center, Martha’s Kitchen, WEHope, CSA – visually augment resident composer Daniel Wood’s spirited “Motivated Silence” and “By Hook or By Crook,” from Michael Kaulkin, winner of the 2020 Quadre International Composition Contest.

This performance is 90 minutes long with one intermission and is appropriate for all ages. It is being performed on ParkStage with lawn seating only – bring a blanket or sit on the grass and enjoy the performance.
