Did you ever see the opening scene of the rockumentary “It Might Get Loud” in which Jack White makes a rudimentary guitar out of a chunk of wood, some nails and string, a pick-up and a Coke bottle?
You could try that or you could one-up him and make learn to make your own six-string guitar at this month’s How-To Night; meet Bay Area musician and self-taught luthier (that’s the fancy term for a stringed instrument maker—see? Already learned something) Mario deSio, who will share his knowledge. He’ll show his guitars (finished and in progress) and tools, and talk about his experiences with anyone who’s interested in this fulfilling craft.
Mario turned his attention to building guitars three years ago, after becoming a father and having his guitar-buying budget slashed. With an unquenchable desire for a Rickenbacker 12-string electric guitar, and experience in furniture repair and construction, he consulted the internet and dove right in.
