Event Details

Heron Arts is pleased to present a group exhibition of new and original works by a curated selection of Nordic and local artists from multiple mediums. Curators Tova Lobatz and Danika Maia have selected artists from Sweden, Denmark, Iceland, San Francisco, Oakland, Los Angeles, and more – whose works shine a light on the concept of cultural identity, stereotypes, nationalism and multiculturalism in a world with continuously expanding borders.

Two cultures vastly distant in tradition and yet somehow akin will be explored, illuminating both their similarities and differences. The exhibition will run from September 22 to October 20th, with an opening reception featuring Swedish-Kenyan musician Beldina on Saturday the 22nd from 7-10pm. The opening reception is free and open to the public.

In this exhibition, artists from across mediums and cultures from The Bay to The Nordics to explore what it means to be from where they’re from. Does place define them? Do they relate to the culture’s “stereotypes”? Do they reject them? Why?

Opening the show will be a performance by LA based Swedish-Kenyan singer and DJ Beldina Malaika, both a fierce representative of the multicultural experience and a stunning musician, having been featured on tracks with Childish Gambino in addition to her own soulful and sultry original tunes. She’ll serenade audiences through the opening of the show with a combination of original music blended seamlessly with alternative Nordic hits, giving context and life to the purpose of the show.
