For several decades Northern California has been home to a thriving community of musical experimenters and builders of unusual, one-of-a-kind instruments. The Spirit of Invention III is an interactive indoor and outdoor exhibit plus live performances of Bay Area Instrument Makers, curated by Peter Whitehead.

The exhibit “Spirit of Invention III” will feature a gallery display of instruments including an outdoor section of instruments designed specifically for outdoor use. Also on display will be an extensive collection of visual scores created for music made with invented instruments, including original hand made scores by pioneers Harry Partch, Ivor Darreg and Lou Harrison.

All types of instrument will be represented – from the simple, quick to make, to more sophisticated hand-crafted designs, new variations on folk instruments, recycled junk constructions, re-configured pianos, electro- acoustic sound sculptures and electronics.

Participating makers include Krys Bobrowski, Oliver Di Cicco, Brian Day, Paul Dresher, Mauro Fortissimo, Larnie Fox, Dan Gottwald, Daryl Henline, Bart Hopkin, Sung Kim, Cheryl Leonard, Tom Nunn, Norman Rutherford, David Samas, Ian Saxton, Daniel Schmidt, Sudhu Tewari, and Peter Whitehead. Additionally, works from artists Darrell De Vore and Ivor Darreg will be displayed.
