Join this free class to learn about the classical Japanese theatre tradition of Kabuki.
San Mateo Kabuki Club is a well-established group that holds classes on the first Sunday of every month, focusing on classic performances on film and participate in related events in the area.
The club is also active in an online community. Anyone is welcome to join the Club’s classes and online community Classes are open to the public.
Join the San Mateo Kabuki Club on Sunday, April 6, at 1:30pm, for a rare chance to study on video the Kabuki theater drama, “Furu Amerika Ni Sode Ha Nurasaji.” The story takes place in the early 1860s, in the midst of the “Bakumatsu,” the final, chaotic years of the Shogunate before the Meiji Restoration.
Having recently allowed foreigners into the country, Japan saw much conflict and violence between foreigners and samurai. In typical Kabuki fashion, the play focuses on the human, emotional impact of the milieu on a few individuals, in this case, a pair of courtesans, and the tragedy that results when one of them is desired by an American client. The production features an all-star cast of the biggest names in Kabuki.
