Judy Dater’s photographs address themes surrounding acknowledgement, personal identity and belonging, and loneliness and solidarity. How does she draw these identities out of her subjects? How does her process capture the beauty, intelligence, and complexity that elevates her models above the merely interesting to the often profound? Dater will present a view into her process through her personal photographs and stories.
Judy Dater, a pioneering figure in feminist art, will present her work in dialogue with some of her models, including Twinka Thiebaud, Anna Buck, and Chris Johnson. Twinka Thiebaud is the daughter of artist Wayne Thiebaud, as well as the subject of one of Dater’s most famous photographs, Imogen and Twinka at Yosemite (1974). Anna Buck is a longtime friend of Dater, and her 1964 portrait inspired Dater to continue exploring themes of feminism and womanhood in her work. Chris Johnson is a fellow photographer and current professor of photography at California College of the Arts.
Following the lecture, please join us for an reception to celebrate the opening of Judy Dater: Only Human for a chance to meet this distinguished artist and have your exhibition catalogue signed.
