Here’s a great free weekend hike idea from SFGATE’s Gabe Lehman.
With its awe-inspiring peaks, stunning valleys and cathedral-like rock formations, Yosemite National Park is one of California’s true treasures. It’s also extremely expensive, overcrowded and occasionally a traffic nightmare.
So, what if I told you that you could get a taste of Yosemite majesty without leaving the Bay Area?

To be entirely honest, you can’t. Nothing beats the real deal. But that doesn’t mean a hike to a tucked-away waterfall in the south Bay Area called Little Yosemite doesn’t make for a delightful day trip. And maybe, with a little imagination, the gorge that’s home to Little Yosemite in Sunol, California, has shades of the real thing.
A water hole along Alameda Creek, Little Yosemite shares its name with the national park known for its waterfalls, granite-looking rock faces and bright-blue pools. It’s in the Sunol Regional Wilderness, about 12 miles outside Fremont, less than an hour’s drive from downtown San Francisco (depending on traffic).
