PROGRAM:
Jory Fankuchen, Principal Conductor
Felix Mendelssohn – The Hebrides (“Fingal’s Cave”)
Nathaniel Heyder – Phases of Ruin, world premiere and SFCO Commission
with support from the NEA and Emerging Black Composers Project
Bela Bartók – Concerto for Viola and Orchestra
featuring Pearl de la Motte, viola – Klein Competition winner
Our program begins with the mysterious sounds of the sea at Fingal’s Cave. Mendelssohn’s incomparable Hebrides Overture, written at the tender age of 21, has captured the imagination of its listeners since the day it was conceived. Following, in our ongoing collaboration with the Emerging Black Composer’s Project, supported by the NEA, we present the work of another talented young composer, Nathaniel Heyder’s World Premiere for chamber orchestra. And in a new collaboration with the Irving Klein International String Competition, we are thrilled to present our final “Rising Star” of the program, viola virtuoso, Pearl de la Motte. Winner of the 2024 competition, Pearl will perform Bartok’s haunting and dynamic Viola Concerto.
