In 2017, over 70,000 people took to the streets across multiple Bay Area marches. The 2018 event merges Bay Area marches and takes place at Lake Merritt in Oakland.
Come together again to demand evidence-based policy and practice, robustly funded and well-communicated science for the common good, and justice in and by science across communities.
This is a family-friendly event with rally, speakers, music, partner booths, interactive demonstrations, food trucks, raffle, and children’s engagement activities.
They are non-partisan, dedicated to the concept that facts do matter. Join in to show your support for:
- Strong uninterrupted funding for basic research
- Engaging and challenging STEAM education from primary grades upward
- Public access to scientific data
- Data-driven policy decisions
- Increased diversity in science leadership, funding, and mentoring
March for Science Bay Area 2018 will be primarily be a Rally with Speaker Series and Science Outreach Fair.
At 2:30 pm, those wishing to march can follow the scenic lake path. This path follows the lake shore for just over one mile to Lakeside Park, where there are opportunities to visit Children’s Fairyland, Lake Merritt Bonsai Gardens, or the docks at Lake Merritt Boating Center. As you continue on the path you will have views of Lake Merritt Wildlife Sanctuary, and after another half-mile passes through the beautiful architecture of The Pergola at Lake Merritt. While the total march around Lake Merritt is about 5 miles, there are plenty of opportunities for attendees to rest, see local attractions, or access public transit.
