Event Details

The Museum of Craft and Design, the Longmore Institute on Disability, and the Palo Alto Art Center present a very exciting virtual MakeArt Lab collaboration, in conjunction with the current Bay Area exhibitions, Mode Brut and The Art of Disability Culture. Facilitated by Rebirth Garments founder Sky Cubacub (They/Them/Xe/Xem/Xyr), join us for a DIY, personalized garment alteration workshop, utilizing items found within your own closets!

Sky will consider how artists from both exhibitions creatively incorporate accessibility into the garment design process and discuss the broader significance of cripping fashion – a rising dress movement catering to those whose gender, sexuality, mental, and/or physical ability typically do not fit in with what normative society deems acceptable. Next, you’ll grab a garment that hasn’t been inspiring you for a while, and let Sky spark some ideas for how to breathe new life into your old clothes!

PLUS we will be joined by Creativity Explored teaching artist Victor Molina (he/him) who will give insights into the virtual collaborative design process employed during the creation of the Mode Brut CE fashion line.

This event will be held in Zoom meeting format so participants can interact with the artist and each other. We will stream a disability activism music playlist and share images of designs from both exhibitions for extra inspiration.
