The American Geophysical Union (AGU) invites you to their public event featuring a lecture on the MAVEN Mission to Mars and over 30 exhibits on space exploration at Marriott Marquis on Mission and 4th Street on Sunday, December 14, 2014.
Public Lecture: The MAVEN Mission to Mars
Noon to 1 pm
Salon 7
AGU’s 2014 Public Lecture will feature the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) spacecraft at Marriott Marquis on Mission and 4th Street. The MAVEN mission was launched in November 2013 and has just arrived at and is orbiting Mars. It will orbit the planet while studying the top of its atmosphere and how it interacts with sunlight and with the solar wind; the goal is to understand where the water and CO2 from an earlier atmosphere went. During the Public Lecture, a panel of experts will discuss the mission science concept, science observations made during the cruise to get there, observations of Comet Siding Spring (which makes a close approach to Mars in October 2014), and early observations of the Mars upper atmosphere.Exploration Station
1-5 pm
Salon 8 & 9
Bring your friends and family and do hands-on science with AGU scientists. Exploration Station, held at the Marriott Marquis on Mission and 4th Street, is a program of activities that gives AGU members who are American Geophysical Union professionals a chance to interact with the public in San Francisco. Participants make their way through about 30 exhibits offering a variety of easy, family friendly, hands-on activities and have an opportunity to interact one-on-one with scientists, engineers, and education specialists. There will also be opportunities for Boy and Girl Scouts to complete merit requirements at many of the booths, and a special Kids’ Zone for our youngest visitors, featuring stomp rockets and arts & crafts activities.
