MLK Weekend of Service + Volunteering 2024

Join us in January to make MLK Day a “day on, not a day off”. We’ll be celebrating the Civil Rights leader’s life and legacy all weekend with volunteer projects from Friday, January 12th – Monday, January 15th. From park maintenance to habitat restoration, there is something for everyone. Bring yourself, your friends, and your family to kick off the new year and take in your community on this National Day of Service! Event registration is required.

When: Friday, January 12 – Monday, January 15, 2024

Where: Project locations vary throughout the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA). Stay up to date on park closure information.

VOLUNTEER PROJECTS

Friday, January 12th 
  • 9 am–Noon, Habitat Stewardship (San Francisco) – Register Here
    Help with invasive plant removal and habitat restoration at Fort Funston.
  • 9 am–Noon, Black Point Gardens (San Francisco) – Register Here
    Tend to a garden with rich horticultural and social history.
  • 9 am–Noon, Presidio Forest Stewards (San Francisco) – Register Here
    Tend to young trees in the Presidio’s reforestation areas while learning about urban forestry and tree care!
  • 6:30–7:30 pm, Marin Wildlife Watch Prospective Volunteer Info Session (Virtual) – More Info & Register Here
    Learn about the Marin Wildlife Watch volunteer program! Volunteers contribute to this community science project by identifying wildlife from photos.
Saturday, January 13th
  • 8:30 am–Noon, Marin Headlands Nursery (Marin) – Register Here
    Grow with us at the Marin Headlands Native Plant Nursery where volunteers help grow plants, collect seeds, maintain the nursery facility, and much more.
  • 9 am–Noon, Presidio Habitat Stewards (San Francisco) – FULL, waitlist spots available.
    Restore and preserve the Presidio’s natural areas while learning about the plants and animals found in our local habitats.
  • 10 am– 1 pm, Monarch Enhancement Planting (Marin) – FULL, waitlist spots available.
    Help plant the Monarch’s host plant and nectar plants to provide food for the Monarch throughout its life stages. In partnership with One Tam and Marin County Parks.
  • 10 am– 1 pm, Rodeo Beach Planting & Restoration (Marin) – Register Here 
    Take part in wetland planting and gully restoration above Rodeo Beach.
Sunday, January 14th 
  • 9 am–Noon, Fort Mason Maintenance (San Francisco) – FULL 
    Preserve and enhance the beautiful landscape of Fort Mason. Work will focus on vegetation management and park clean-up.
  • 9:30 am–2:30pm, Habitat Restoration Tennessee Valley (Marin Headlands) – Register Here 
    Protect dune and bluff habitats in advance of annual spring super blooms at the Tennessee Valley Cove by weeding invasive plants, including sour grass and Veldt grass.
  • 9:30 am–2:30pm, Habitat Restoration Dipsea Trail (Marin) – Register Here
    Protect native plants and improve habitat surrounding the historic  Dipsea Trail near Stinson beach. Work will focus planting native species on this gentle hill slope and pulling invasive species.
Monday, January 15th 
  • 9 am–Noon, Fort Mason Maintenance (San Francisco) – FULL
    Preserve and enhance the beautiful landscape of Fort Mason. Work will focus on vegetation management and park clean-up.
  • 9 am–Noon, Muir Woods Maintenance (Marin) – FULL, waitlist spots available.
    Help prolong the life of the Muir Woods boardwalk by giving it a good “floss” to remove dirt and debris during this family-friendly project.
  • 10 am– 1 pm, Battery Maintenance (San Francisco) – FULL, waitlist spots available.
    Join us at three different battery locations – Battery Boutelle, Battery Godfrey, and Battery Marcus Miller – to help maintain these historic sites! Volunteers will assist with maintenance projects including dirt and vegetation removal, weeding, and litter pick-up.

Groups of five or more require special arrangements and must be confirmed in advance. Please review the List of Available Projects and fill out the Group Project Request Form.
