MoAD: Museum of the African Diaspora Free Museum Day (SF)

MoAD, a contemporary art museum, celebrates Black cultures, ignites challenging conversations, and inspires learning through the global lens of the African Diaspora.

Starting March 2025 Temporary Closure for Building Upgrades

MoAD will be closing to the public temporarily in 2025 to upgrade items in our interior spaces and galleries. Due to this extensive work, the museum will be closed from March through September 2025, but will continue to host programs and events off-site in collaboration with many of MoAD’s local partners. We look forward to welcoming the public back in October 2025 as part of our 20th anniversary celebration!

Special Exhibitions for 2025

Cosmic Ceremony
Dec. 18, 2024 – Feb. 2, 2025
In Cosmic Ceremony, Soleé Darrell’s paintings evoke distant galaxies, star formations, and supernovae to describe the inner worlds to which she hopes to draw us ever nearer. Each silk velvet painting masterfully blends vivid dyes and texture, elevating earthly hues into celestial realms. Silk velvet works such as Within the body are gardens (2024) and Blessed are they who remember (2024) depict gentle organic forms where free-flowing colors unite in harmony.

Liberatory Living: Protective Interiors & Radical Black Joy
Oct. 2, 2024 – Mar. 2, 2025
Two Black feminist frameworks collaborate in curator Key Jo Lee’s curatorial idea of spaces crafted to incubate Black Joy, an idea that will be expressed theoretically and materially throughout the exhibition.

What We Carry To Set Ourselves Free
Oct. 2, 2024 – Mar. 2, 2025
A solo project by interdisciplinary artist Helina Metaferia that engages both the interior and exterior of the museum. The exhibition includes a hand made collage replicated as a large scale vinyl mural, a text based installation, a wearable sculpture, a video performance.

Love + Basketball
Feb. 5, 2025 – Mar. 2, 2025
In celebration of MoAD’s 20th Anniversary, we are thrilled to present Love + Basketball, a unique and inspiring exhibition that intertwines the worlds of art and sports. Launching during the electrifying NBA All-Star Weekend and Black History Month, this vibrant exhibition is a tribute to the rich tapestry of the African Diaspora and its profound impact on both artistic expression and athletic excellence.
