Event Details

We Micromanage Infinity
Absorbed in modular synth tangles, software snarls, and engrossed with toy noisemakers and birdcalls, audience eye contact can be hard to come by when this supertrio of Blevin Blectum, James Goode and Thomas Dimuzio take the stage. There’s no time for guitarface or elvis presley moves when you are fine tuning minutae of the infinite miasma. Humans are not mimetic, as the paypal antichrist preaches to his brownshirts. No, we are strapped into the multiverse, inimitable puppets of fate that can only be steered by simulataneous tugs on our innumerable attachments. It’s down to us, we storm-tossed action figures of flesh and juice, to thrash, dance, kung fu grip, and scream ourselves into that tangle, even as we stare into the impassive face of three micromanaging furies. Like all beauty, it’s grim.

DJ Female Convict Scorpion
“DJ” as in Shadow, Marclay, Oswaldian Plunderphonics, the term denotes an art of turntablism, or it should! With a rich history of sampling particularly in the Bay Area from Bob Ostertag, Negativland, Culturcide, Invisibl Skratch Piklz and S*Glass right up to the present with Evicshen and Julia Mazawa. Those who know this lineage treasure the larcenies of Josh Pollock who harvests the most sinister sources. His music is indistinguishable from a seance where you’re related to the ghosts through cinema, psych, freejazz and philosophy. He plays in psychedelic orchestras like Daevid Allen’s University Of Errors but there he wields guitar whereas sampling affords him the widest palette of sound, concept and style, where his wraithic collaborators include Grace Jones, The Skaters, Alan Watts, Scott Walker and Sammy Davis Jr but also the coolest and scariest characters in film. It’s a tremendous ability to pull from such varied sources without ending up scattered or tangled. Pollock does it with speed, showing us through the darkest funniest alleys of the briar patch. As with the eponymous prisoner herself, spurn this exploited side-eyed killer only at your peril.

Shatter Pattern
Through sound, dance, costumed computation, and visualization Jules Litman-Cleper blazes spidering trails across fragile shells, divining the wells of survivable life and showing us to the bathy froth of time that predates vision. Human eyes are like eggs, born with a startle from the primordial chicken they’re made to trace sharp edges. So the clarity of vision lends itself to quantification, immediacy, violence. But the chicken had to cum first, or why survive? Vibration precedes sight, desire precedes survival and the world was always more than quantifiable surface, more fun than fear, where shatter precedes pattern.

Ron Heglin & Lorin Benedict
We have met the alien and it always has been us, prentending at a unified species while clinging to cultural norms, none more fundamental than speech. Surely you’ve had phonemes lock you out before, words for a time refusing their common signification. You find your brain left all on its own, verging and tussling with sounds the way a river wrestles rapids. And what if another voice were to wade into that solipsistic cataract? A doubled language would arise as spring geyser, the way all language did. When are sounds words and words sounds? All the time! Computational condensed-matter physicist Lorin Benedict and virtuoso trombomist Ron Heglin are two stunning masters of a rare yet shared ability: To hoist the rules and strictures of logos high above in order to dump them over our heads onto wherever the floor used to be. Hearing them live is a miracle not to be missed. These alien facedancers of Dune have performed with the likes of Steve Coleman, Wadada Leo Smith, Jack Wright, Tom Nunn, Sam Ospovat, Tom Djll, all while surviving the Baron Harkonnen. Climb out from your alien tank and slither quickly to the Peacock Lounge by 8pm to learn some truly new songs, all-ages welcome!
