Event Details

Come celebrate Mother’s Day Weekend with the whole family at Fort Funston! We will have activities for the young and young-at-heart!

We will enjoy a kid-friendly walk around the dunes, playing games and spotting native plants. Those who are up for a climb can then continue down to the beach to look for bank swallows or just build sandcastles.

Walk Leaders: Kirstin Weeks

Kirstin is a member of Nature in the City’s Advisory Council and the principle of Bio Studio. She collaborates to design places where people and nature thrive together and projects that contribute to a living future for all. A long time ago, before becoming an ecological design consultant, Kirstin led educational hikes for kids at Fort Funston’s through the SFUSD’s Environmental Science Center.

Details:

The first ~hour will be relatively flat walking on a mix of deep sand and paved trails with a possible short (~30’ vertical) climb to the top of a historic battery. Activities and stops to smell the flowers will abound! In the second ~hour, we will descend about 160 sand stairs to the beach (and what goes down must come back up again!). Participants in this segment can walk to look for bank swallows or enjoy some unstructured beach time.

Moderate difficulty with a sandy descent and ascent to the beach, plus walking for a short distance along the beach.

Preparation:

People may want to bring water, snacks and layered clothing to accommodate the potential for coastal wind, fog, sun or all three! Footwear should be comfortable for both sand and trails.

Meeting Location:

Meet at the “hang gliders deck” at the end of the main parking lot. Look for the orange wind sock!

Parking is free and abundant.

Transportation:

The nearest lines within walking distance are the L-Taraval and the 29 bus.

Cost:

This walk is FREE to attend (with RSVPs kindly requested).

Donations (in cash) can be made to Nature in the City on the day of the event. Special bonus! Everyone who donates $10 and above will receive a copy of the Nature in the City Map.
