Oakland’s “How to Smell Your World” Scent Festival (2023)

Come enjoy dozens of nature’s most amazing and precious smells, and learn a new relationship to smell through a mindfulness-based approach to our most vivid sense. Like a festival for the nose! Presented by Michael Devine, an avid smeller, a student of perfumery, and a practitioner of mindfulness. And while there, enjoy MeloMelo Kava Bar’s amazing kava and kombucha drinks!

Come enjoy a hundred of nature’s most amazing and precious smells, and learn a new relationship to smell through a mindfulness-based approach to our most vivid sense. There will be some deconstructed smells as well, such as the smell of pine, basil,  jasmine, soil, and, separately, all the individual aromatic chemicals that make up those smells.

You’ll even get to smell some of the chemicals in poop that are, surprisingly, widely used in perfumery: skatole and indole.”

Other interesting things will be chemicals that share the same chemical formula, but have different chirality (like mirror images in 3-space) and very different smell, such as carvone-D and carvone-L, one smells like caraway seeds and the other smells minty!

It’s kind of like a music festival and meditation retreat for your nose!

There will be a short talk at 7:15, followed by lots of smelling! Presented by Michael Devine, an avid smeller, a student of perfumery, and a practitioner of mindfulness.

And, while there, enjoy MeloMelo Kava Bar’s amazing kava and kombucha drinks, and cozy ambience!
