The Christian Science church in Palo Alto is hosting an free online organ concert by celebrated organist, James Welch.

Welch will perform a concert recital of favorite songs and folk melodies arranged by contemporary California composer Dale Wood (1934-2003). The program will include such favorites as “Amazing Grace,” “The Gift to Be Simple,” and “How Great Thou Art.”

Perhaps the best known and most published contemporary composer for the organ, Wood’s arrangements range from the romantically lush to the very light-hearted, and reflect his collaboration with jazz pianist George Shearing. Welch’s performance will include arrangements of spirituals, international folk tunes, and some Christmas carols.

In addition to playing for the Christian Science church’s Wednesday evening testimony meetings, Welch is University Organist of Santa Clara University and serves as organist of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Palo Alto. Welch received the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in organ performance from Stanford University, with further studies in France and Austria. He has concertized internationally, with performances in such prestigious venues as Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, the Leipzig Gewandhaus, National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., and the Mormon Tabernacle in Salt Lake City. He has also performed and taught in Beijing, Taipei, Hong Kong, New Zealand, and Jerusalem.
