It’s the mid-1980s, and despite their hard-rocking seventeen years together and fifteen albums, all is not well on Spinal Tap’s tour of the U.S. to promote their album “Smell the Glove”. The venues are much smaller and the cancellations keep coming.

There are problems with the album cover and airplay, and tension is growing in the “loudest band in Britain” between guitarists David St. Hubbins (Michael McKean) and Nigel Tufnel (Christopher Guest). Bass guitarist Derek Smalls (Harry Shearer) is being very loudly and publicly divorced by his wife back in London. Odds are that recently hired drummer Mick Shrimpton (R. J. Parnell) most likely will soon meet his death. And filmmaker Marti DeBergi (Rob Reiner) is on the scene with his cameras and microphones to record every dramatic moment of this ill-fated tour.
