Event Details

On April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will cross North America, passing over Mexico, the United States, and Canada. A total solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, completely blocking the face of the Sun. The sky will darken as if it were dawn or dusk. It will be the last total solar eclipse visible from the contiguous United States until 2044.

Unfortunately, only a partial eclipse will be visible in the San Francisco Bay Area. It will look like someone has taken a bite out of the sun.

Thanks to TimeandDate for sharing the Solar Eclipse Viewing Times in the San Francisco Bay Area:

April 8, 2024

  • Partial Solar Eclipse Begins: 10:14 am – The moment the edge of the Moon touches the edge of the Sun is called first contact.
  • Maximum Eclipse: 11:13 am – The deepest point of the eclipse, with the Sun at its most hidden.
  • Partial Solar Eclipse Ends: 12:15 pm – The edge of the Moon leaves the edge of the Sun.

People located in the center of the Moon’s shadow when it hits Earth will experience a total eclipse. The sky will darken as if it were dawn or dusk. Weather permitting, people in the path of a total solar eclipse can see the Sun’s corona, the outer atmosphere, which is otherwise usually obscured by the bright face of the Sun. A total solar eclipse is the only type of solar eclipse where viewers can momentarily remove their eclipse glasses (which are not the same as regular sunglasses) for a brief period of time when the Moon is completely blocking the Sun. – NASA
