Here’s a great free weekend hike idea from SFGATE’s Eric Brooks.

The Marin Headlands are known for intimate beaches, coves and gorgeous hikes.

But rarely does the beaten path lead to a “shrouded mystery,” as is the case with this challenging route that starts up a long driveway between three hillside Mill Valley homes and ends at an intimate, hidden beach called Pirates Cove.

For more details on this hike including photos, and extensive trail notes, check out the article Even locals don’t know about this Bay Area beach hike to secluded Pirates Cove from SFGATE

The 7.8-mile hike is mostly moderate but does include some strenuous and sweat-inducing uphill climbs. The fresh air and views — of which there are many — are worth it a thousand times over. Once you’re over the ridge and into the open, the San Francisco skyline peeks over the hills to your left as an expansive view of the coastline comes into view to the front.

And then you’ll hike down a steep 350-drop into Pirates Cove, a remote beach teeming with marine life.
