KALW | 220 Montgomery Street, San Francisco, CA

Event Details

A beloved tech exec was found stabbed in the streets of San Francisco. The city took the blame. What really happened? Free Joyride Pizza.

Bloomberg reporter Shawn Wen in conversation with Mission Local’s Joe Eskenazi

Foundering is an award-winning serialized podcast from the journalists of Bloomberg’s tech team. The new season explains how the murder of a beloved tech executive in 2023 fueled tech’s rightward shift and brought tensions between the tech industry and San Francisco to a boiling point.

In this special performance, the audience will hear an excerpt from the five-part podcast series and a conversation between Wen and Eskenazi about how Lee’s death became a symbol of the San Francisco “doom loop.”

Shawn Wen is the creator and executive producer of Foundering, an award-winning, serialized podcast from Bloomberg News. She is also the author of A Twenty Minute Silence Followed By Applause (Sarabande, 2017). Her radio work has broadcast on This American Life, Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Freakonomics Radio, and Marketplace. She holds a BA from Brown University. Wen was born in Beijing, raised in the suburbs of Atlanta, GA, and currently resides in San Francisco with her husband and son.

Joe Eskenazi is Managing Editor/Columnist for Mission Local. Joe was born in San Francisco, raised in the Bay Area, and attended U.C. Berkeley. He never left.

Joe was a writer and columnist for SF Weekly from 2007 to 2015, and a senior editor at San Francisco Magazine from 2015 to 2017. You may also have read his work in the Guardian (U.S. and U.K.); San Francisco Public Press; San Francisco Chronicle; San Francisco Examiner; Dallas Morning News; and elsewhere. He resides in the Excelsior with his wife and three (!) kids, 4.3 miles from his birthplace and 5,474 from hers.

The Northern California branch of the Society of Professional Journalists named Eskenazi the 2019 Journalist of the Year.

There is a $10 – $20 sliding scale suggested donation for this event. Nobody will be turned away for lack of funds.
