Event Details

Join a daylong public celebration of the 150th anniversary of the San Francisco Port which will include events and activities along the waterfront from Hyde Street Pier in the north to Heron’s Head Park (Pier 98) in the south on April 28, 2013 from 10am to 5pm.

Highlights include a treasure hunt (11a-3p), a fireboat ceremony (2:30pm) and guided walking tours all day.

Activities include:

Treasure Hunt

  • 11am to 3pm: Waterfront Treasure Hunt – Pier 43 to Pier 40 (Fisherman’s Wharf to AT&T Park), FREE
    Compete in this waterfront Treasure Hunt for Adults and Children hosted by SF Treasure Hunts. Stop by the Port of San Francisco’s Pier 1 office to pick up a copy of the clues. Clues will also be posted on this website at 11 am on April 28, 2013. Top 5 participants will win Port 150th Gift Bag. Prizes can be collected at the Port offices until 4 pm.

Open Houses and Exhibits

  • 10am to 5pm: Hyde Street Pier Open House – SF Maritime National Historic Park & Visitor Center, $5 Adults, Visitor Center, FREE
    View the Balclutha, Alma, C.A. Thayer, Eureka, Hercules, Bay Ark and other historic vessels at the San Francisco Maritime National Historic Park during a special museum event. Free admission for children 16 and under and $5 for adults.
  • 10am to 4pm: Pier 45 Tours, Veteran’s Tribute at the USS Pampanito & SS Jeremiah O’Brien, $5 Adults
    See the USS Pampanito and the Jeremiah O’Brien including a special museum event with free admission for children 12 and under and $5 for adults.
  • 10am to 5pm: Pier 23 – America’s Cup Open House, FREE
    Learn about the 2013 America’s Cup and the Summer of Racing at this special open house. Visitors will have access to all kinds of America’s Cup information, including ticketing and videos.
  • 10am to 5pm: Pier 15/17 – The Exploratorium Special Exhibit, Free in the Public Access Area Only
    Join the Exploratorium for a special exhibit in the public access areas. Bay Observatory Gallery- Learn to uncover the stories embedded in a place by directly observing the geography, history, and ecology of the San Francisco Bay region.
  • 10am to 5pm: Pier 3 – Hornblower Cruises Open House Tour, FREE
    Take a special tour of docked Hornblower vessels.
  • 11am to 5pm: Pier 22½ – Open Firehouse & Historical Exhibit, FREE
    Join the San Francisco Fire Department at Pier 22½ fire station as they showcase the fireboats of the Bay Area and a special historical exhibit. The fireboat ceremony will start at 2:30pm.
  • 10am to 5pm: Pier 52 – Mariposa Hunter’s Point & Bayview Yacht Clubs Open House, FREE
    These historic San Francisco boat clubs, Bayview Yacht and Mariposa Hunter’s Point Boat Club, will each host an open house from 10 am to 5 pm. See the historic diving equipment exhibit and demonstration at the Bayview boat club from 12 pm- 5pm. Free boat rides.
  • 10am to 5pm: Pier 70 – Noonan Building Artist Studio Open House, FREE
    See the historic Noonan building and a special Noonan Artists Open House at Pier 70.
    Featured artists include: Mark Abramson, Kim Austin, Pamela Axelson, Suzy Barnard, Francis Berry, Robert Berry Design, Nancy Caten, Linda Colotti, Daniel Phill, Paul Dyer, Connie Constance Harris, Phillip Hua, Henry Jackson, Walter Kennedy, Carey Lin, David Magnusson, Marti McKee, Keith D. Plymale, Adele Louise Shaw.
  • Noon to 5pm: 100 Cargo Way – SF Bay Railroad Open House, Railroad Demonstration and Goats, FREE
    The San Francisco Bay Railroad is a Class 3 short-line railroad that serves the City of San Francisco and the Port of San Francisco. Stop by to visit the open house, learn about how railroads work, and view the real-live goats.
  • 1-4pm: Pier 98 – Heron’s Head Park and EcoCenter Open House Sustainability Tours, FREE
    Explore the Heron’s Head Park and EcoCenter – San Francisco’s first 100% off-the-grid building. EcoCenter green building tours will be hosted by City College of San Francisco.

Lectures

  • 11am to 4pm: Pier 39 – Sea Lions Lectures on the K-dock, Marine Mammal Center, FREE
    Learn about the world famous California sea lions and the history of their arrival at PIER 39’s K-Dock from Aquarium of the Bay Naturalists. Be sure to stop by the Crystal Geyser ALPINE SPRING WATER Stage to catch a performance from San Francisco’s premier street performers.
  • 10am to 5pm: Pier 1 – Port of San Francisco Lecture Series, FREE
    Hear about the history and culture of the waterfront including lectures and exhibits from:

    • 11am – Michael Corbett, author of Port City – The History and Transformation of the Port of San Francisco, 1848-2010
    • The history chronicling the rich history of San Francisco’s maritime past. Port City is the first book to tell the comprehensive—and largely unknown—story of the City’s waterfront.
    • Noon – Jasper Rubin, author of A Negotiated Landscape – The Transformation of San Francisco’s Waterfront Since 1950
    • Examines the transformation of San Francisco’s waterfront from 1950 to the turn of the millennium.
    • 1pm – Black Buffalo Soldiers – Their contribution to California.
    • Lecture and Exhibit: Francisco Da Costa, Anthony Powell, Andrew Bozeman, David Wilkin, and Olton Rensch.
  • 10am to 5pm: Pier 1 – Union Labor Film Festival & Exhibit, FREE
    Come view historic union films illustrating the formation of today’s waterfront and San Francisco labor organizations. Films include:

    • 11am: We Are the ILWU, 29 minutes
    • 11:45am: The Men Who Sailed the Liberty Ships, 1 hour
    • 3pm: 1934 Strike & Newsreel Footage, 10 minutes
    • 3:15pm: Bloody Thursday, 57 minutes
  • Kayaking and Whale Boating
    • 10am to 2pm: Kayak and Whale Boat Tours – Aquatic Park to Bayview, FREE (but you’ll need to rent a kayak)
      The Bay Area Sea Kayakers (BASK) and Bay Area Whale Rowing Association (BAWRA) invites you to a free waterside tour of the Port of San Francisco. Paddle from Fisherman’s Wharf to Bayview with stops along the way. Kayak rentals available through City Kayak for $20.     Walking and Biking Tours

    • 10am to 12:30pm: San Francisco Bicycle Coalition and the Port of San Francisco Waterfront Tour, $5 non-members, Free for SF Bicycle Coalition Members
      Join the SF Bicycle Coalition for a 150th Anniversary History & Development Ride along the waterfront. Meet on Terry Francois Blvd at the terminus of 16th Street (North-side of Agua Vista Park/remains of Pier 64)
    • San Francisco City Guide Walking Tours – Various Locations (see website for details), FREE. Various times.
      Free special tours provided by SF City Guides experts on the history of the Port and San Francisco.

Beginning in April and throughout the remainder of 2013, the Port plans to have events and activities on the waterfront, and throughout the City including: museum exhibits, lectures, a film festival, and interpretive displays that highlight the Port’s rich maritime and cultural history and showcase the vibrant “people port” that it’s become today.
