Event Details

It’s a tough time for local bookstores, what with the social distancing and the sheltering in place. So we’re raising funds to help local Bay Area bookstores stay in business.

Andrew Sean Greer is the Pulitzer Prize winning author of six works of fiction, including the bestsellers The Confessions of Max Tivoli and Less. Greer has taught at a number of universities, including the Iowa Writers Workshop, been a TODAY show pick, a New York Public Library Cullman Center Fellow, a judge for the National Book Award, and a winner of the California Book Award and the New York Public Library Young Lions Award. He is the recipient of an NEA grant, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. He lives in San Francisco.

Baltimore-raised and Southern-fried, Miah Jeffra is author of The First Church of What’s Happening (Nomadic 2017), The Fabulous Ekphrastic Fantastic! (Sibling Rivalry 2020), the forthcoming The Violence Almanac (Black Lawrence 2021), and is co-editor, with Arisa White and Monique Mero, of the anthology Home is Where You Queer Your Heart (Foglifter 2020). Miah is founding editor of queer literary collaborative, Foglifter Press.

The beneficiary:

Alley Cat Books opened on 24th Street in the heart of the Mission in 2011, and has since supplied a book-hungry neighborhood with new, used, and remaindered books—in English and Spanish! They also carry a colorful array of magazines, calendars, and notebooks. A general interest store, they have a little of everything. Their staff is happy to help you locate specific titles or you can roam around discovering wondrous obscurities you never knew you couldn’t live without. Make your way to the back of the store and discover their spacious art gallery, where local and international art adorns the high walls. You might happen upon an art opening, poetry reading, or film screening.

How does it work?

We use the conferencing system Zoom. After you sign up you’ll get an email with the Zoom access code. (Check that Eventbrite is using your current email address.) You don’t have to join with video, but it’s nice to see faces.
