Push The Feeling is back Saturday, October 4th with a very special DJ set from Awesome Tapes From Africa (aka Brian Shimkovitz) with residents YR SKULL and epicsauce.
If unfamiliar, Awesome Tapes From Africa is a blog turned label turned DJ persona highlighting (as the name suggests) unheard and forgotten musical classics from throughout Africa. The project began when founder Brian Shimkovitz travelled to Ghana on Fulbright Scholarship for ethnomusicology and immersed himself in the region’s musical history — more trips followed, with Shimkovitz slowly building an arsenal of rare tapes that had often been left unheard for decades.
ATFA has since become a in-demand DJ, playing the eclectic mix of danceable gems via two tape players and mixer at clubs and festivals around the world. The project has received praise from the likes of Pitchfork, XLR8R, The New York Times, The Guardian and just about everyone else imaginable.
Please note, this edition of Push The Feeling is $5 before 10 pm and $8 after.
