Lisbeth Haas, Saints and Citizens: Indigenous Histories of Colonial Missions and Mexican California (University of California Press, 2011). Deepen your understanding of California colonial encounters by hearing the voices of Indigenous leaders, artisans, painters, and translators who labored in the Spanish missions. Investigate the politics of Indigenous citizenship in independent Mexico through the Chumash War of 1824, native emancipation after 1826, and the pursuit of Indigenous rights and land through 1848. Presidio Book Club is an inclusive gathering that anyone can take part in, whether or not they’ve read the book. Led by Presidio Trust historian, Dr. Barbara Berglund Sokolov. Presented in association with the California Historical Society’s current exhibitions. Copies of the books are available for purchase at the California Historical Society.
