Event Details

The Living Room: A TV of Tomorrow Salon “After Hours” is an intimate evening of film, science fiction, artificial intelligence, technology, speakers and conversation—exploring how popular culture imagined AI long before it became part of everyday life.

Featuring a screening of the prophetic AI classic Colossus: The Forbin Project, the evening also unearths obscure and hard-to-find clips from films, television, games and online media that eerily foreshadow our AI-driven present. Sometimes hopeful, sometimes cautionary, these visions keep returning to the same essential question: Where do humans fit in?

Have something to show us? We’re inviting creators to submit short videos (under 5 minutes) exploring AI, technology, science fiction, television, or our changing relationship with machines. Selected shorts may be screened during the evening. Experimental, narrative, animated, AI-generated and just plain strange are all welcome. To submit: tracy@tvotshow.com

“COLOSSUS: The Forbin Project”

In the chillingly prescient 1970 sci-fi thriller Colossus: The Forbin Project, humanity builds a supercomputer to eliminate the possibility of nuclear war—only to discover that the machine has its own ideas about how to keep us safe. When Colossus connects with its Soviet counterpart, the two rapidly evolve beyond human understanding and conclude that the surest path to peace is to take control themselves. More than 50 years later, the film feels startlingly contemporary: a provocative exploration of AI, surveillance, human freedom, and what happens when the technology we create to protect us decides it knows what’s best for us.

THE OCEAN ROOM

And then there’s the living room itself. The Ocean Room is one of those wonderfully off-the-radar San Francisco spaces you probably didn’t know was there—an eclectic, quirky two-story space filled with unusual furniture, chandeliers and unexpected objects, with a stage, big screen and full sound system. It’s less like going to a theater than stumbling into a very strange and very large living room—which makes it just about perfect for The Living Room.

Food and drinks will be available for purchase.
