Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky – Serenade for Strings, Op. 48
Grammy award winner, and Musical America’s 2023 Composer of the Year, Jessie Montgomery has become one of America’s leading musical voices. She describes “Strum” as “Drawing on American folk idioms and the spirit of dance and movement. . ., a kind of narrative that begins with fleeting nostalgia and transforms into ecstatic celebration.” Our next work, “A Game of Cat and Mike”, is an SFCO co-commission by two time Grammy award winner, violinist and composer Evan Price. Written for two mandolin soloists and chamber orchestra, this colorful and evocative work takes us through the history of mandolin playing, from Baroque to modern day Bluegrass. Tchaikovsky’s rich and opulent Serenade for Strings concludes our concert. One of the most beloved compositions in our repertoire, the Serenade is awash with soaring melodies and ravishing harmony.
