“San Patricios Day” Outdoor Festival at Irish Center San Francisco

On Sunday, September 12th, “San Patricios Day” will be put on at Wawona Gates by sponsoring organizations the United Irish Cultural Center, Dowling Library, Irish Culture Bay Area and the San Francisco Irish Mexican Association.

The St. Patrick’s Battalion was made up of Irish conscripted soldiers who deserted the U.S. army to bravely defend Mexico during the Mexican-American War of 1846-48. This event honors the San Patricios’ legacy and celebrates the commonalities and kinship of Mexican and Irish people and cultures, featuring Mexican and Irish traditional music and dance performances. Renowned historian Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz will give a talk on “The San Patricio Battalion, a Lesson in Anti-Colonial Solidarity”. Free admission – all ages welcome.

1:20 Welcome remarks from Patrick Goggins and Catherine John of the San Francisco Irish Mexican Association
1:30 Video greetings from Clifden and Mexico City, from the Clifden Historical Society and the Mexico City Irish Pipe Band
2:15 Irish and Mexican cultural performances, with:
– Michael Dillon School of Irish Dancing and Boyle Irish Dance academy
– Grupo Danza Colibrí
– Son de la Bahía (traditional jarocho music from Veracruz)
– Darcy Noonan and friends (traditional Irish music)
4:30 Closing Remarks from the Consuls General of Ireland and Mexico in San Francisco: Robert O’Driscoll and Remedios Gomez
5:00 Keynote speaker via livestream: Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz (viewing in the St. Francis Room)

Food and Full Bar available all day. Food is available at Carlos Mora’s Taco Truck on-site.
