SF History Night | Pacific Heights
The San Francisco History Association hosts monthly talks which explore our city’s enchanting history in depth.
Each month, a local history expert hosts a themed talk usually accompanied by a slide show with light refreshments.
Artists Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo left their hearts and significant pieces of art in San Francisco. Kahlo’s signature Diego and Frieda Rivera wedding portrait is an icon at SFMOMA. Rivera’s colossal Pan American Unity fresco mural, a world-class treasure, was painted in 1940 at the Golden Gate International Exposition on Treasure Island expressly for City College of San Francisco. His work in the United States is bracketed by his 1930 and 1940 stays in San Francisco. In 2020 the 20-ton mural will be moved temporarily to SFMOMA as the star of a big exhibition on Rivera’s murals.
For 22 years Will Maynez has researched and lectured on Diego Rivera’s Pan American Unity mural at City College of San Francisco as well as Rivera’s other local murals. As the mural steward, he maintains its website and writes its newsletter. He has written a one-act Interview with Frida and a play, Rapsodia en Azul: An American in Mexico, about a 1935 Mexico City party for George Gershwin. He currently serves on various committees surrounding the 2020 SFMOMA-CCSF collaboration.
