In March 2019, the San Francisco Public Library presents HERstory, a month-long celebration of Women’s History Month, honoring and acknowledging the contributions of women and the unique experience of being female today with a diverse array of lectures, films, performances and programs for all ages at every library location.

Arisa White and Laura Atkins share insights and experiences in co-writing Biddy Mason Speaks Up, second book in the Fighting for Justice Series and aimed at middle grade readers.

Biddy Mason was an enslaved woman who won her freedom through the courts in Los Angeles. She was a midwife and plant healer, saved money to buy property, and became the richest woman in Los Angeles.
