The Environmental Justice Summit is a bold platform for representation and activism that elevates and amplifies the voices and power of people of color as leaders in the environmental justice movement. Environmentalism is a movement that impacts all classes, colors, and demographics of society, yet there is a lack of diversity in the environmental movement itself.
People of color are strong supporters of environmental issues, more so than is commonly perceived. After all, communities of color have a much higher risk of getting polluted and have historically been targeted as dumping sites for toxic waste. This lack of diversity is hurting the movement and stalling progress that has been made to address the issue of climate change. If we want to continue making advancements in the climate justice movement, we need to be more inclusive.
At our 6th Annual EnvironmentalJustice Summit, leading BIPOC environmental organizers from the Bay Area and beyond will come together to share experiences and discuss steps to diversify the Green Movement and needs of our vulnerable communities.
In partnership with San Francisco Baykeeper and hosted at the Presidio this event will foster collaboration between large NGOs and grassroots environmental justice organizations. The spotlight of this event will be placed on the underserved communities who are most impacted by climate change, in hope that their needs and people will be better represented by the movement.
As one of our flagship events, the Environmental Justice Summit (EJS) will attract and engage a diverse audience and build an inclusive multiracial coalition that crosses cultural, geographic, racial, age, gender, religious, and political boundaries. This will be a free all-ages festival style event that will be accessible to all.
Supporting BIPOC leaders increases the impact and scope of the environmental movement. This requires listening to the input of impacted community members and building trust with communities of color. It will also unite like-minded environmental organizations to connect, exchange ideas, and foster long lasting partnerships.
