SF’s Mt. Sutro Spring Nature Walks (2023)

Mount Sutro Nature Walks are back!

Join us for a guided spring nature walk on the Mount Sutro Open Space between March and May! Our experienced leaders will lead you through the trails on a two-hour tour on a variety of focused topics. However, on each walk you’ll learn about the unique ecology of the area and the efforts being made to preserve and protect it. Check out our Eventbrite Page to see dates and topics!

Saturday, May 20: Enjoy a leisurely walk around Mount Sutro with Sutro Stewards Programs Coordinator, Geri Diaz, as we witness all that it provides as food for humans and other animals. Depending on blooms, we will forage to make native plant tea or wild plum spritzes.

Space is limited to 15 people per walk. RSVP is required.

Suggested donation $20. This is not a top or bottom limit; please give what you can to support our educational efforts and our work to improve the Mount Sutro Open Space through trail building and maintenance, plant propagation, and habitat restoration!

Limited parking is available for participants during the hike. Parking is available along Clarendon Avenue or Christopher Drive and a short 5-10 minute walk to the nursery or at red Aldea Guest parking spots.

Accessibility: Please note trails on Mount Sutro can be steep and narrow, which may pose a challenge for some hikers. Hikers with mobility challenges may find some parts of Mount Sutro’s trails difficult to traverse.

**Hikes may be canceled for rain or high winds. Hikes will be canceled if there are not at least 3 RSVPs 2 hours prior to the event. Please check your email for updates.**

Featuring Ildiko Polony: We will be exploring the oftentimes elluisive and sometimes overwhelming path of water in this walk of the Woodland Canyon Creek watershed. In June of 2022, Sutro Stewards began work to restore one of few remianing above ground creeks in San Francisco. Woodland Canyon Creek is a seasonal creek that begins on the summit of Mount Sutro and is culverted into a pipe at Stanyan Street. We envision a creek bed clear of invasive brambles, and teaming with life supported by native plants. Join us to learn about the creek, our efforts to restore it and how you can get involved.
