Imagine a postcard sent from San Francisco 100 years in the future. What might someone write back and what images would they send to describe how the city has responded to sea-level rise in the 22nd century? Postcards from the Future, San Francisco 2123 is an interactive Augmented Reality installation that addresses these questions and invites the public to explore the past, present, and potential future transformations of the San Francisco’s Embarcadero waterfront.

Postcards from the Future, San Francisco 2123 speculates on how San Francisco can develop a long-term planning framework that supports climate change resilience and biodiversity in a win-win strategy that increases the role of nature-based solutions that embrace tidal ecologies in urban environments. The project seeks to inspire collective optimism and empower informed action by reframing the challenges of sea-level rise as an opportunity for design innovation.

Join students in the interdisciplinary DISC program at UC Berkeley, who will share their future visions of San Francisco that seek to address climate change, social equity, and urban health. The event will begin with a Pop-up Exhibition at the Exploratorium’s Fisher Bay Observatory followed by an Augmented Reality Tour along the Embarcadero. AR installations along the waterfront will bring to life potential future scenarios by visualizing place-based changes across time at designated locations, providing a platform to exchange knowledge and enable discourse about future sea-level rise adaptation. The public is invited to participate in this guided tour that will begin in front of the Exploratorium and end at the Ferry Building.

Whether you’re a technology enthusiast, a urban design buff, or simply curious about what lies ahead, this event is sure to spark your curiosity. Don’t miss out on this unique opportunity to witness the future of San Francisco firsthand.
