On October 28th, 2023, beloved Inner Sunset watering hole, The Little Shamrock celebrates an impressive 130 years of operation with drink deals, free Victorian Split Pea Soup and live jams from 1PM – 2AM. Come out in your Halloween best – Victorian Era inspired costumes encouraged! San Francisco’s oldest continuously operational bar, The Shammy (as regulars call it) provides a come-as-you-are / let’s get casual atmosphere. Known as a spot where regulars and weekend warriors alike can enjoy the cozy fireplace (a rarity in SF), admire the craftsmanship of the gorgeous old build backbar, or try a hand at darts for some old fashioned competition. Sometimes even a drive-by destination for Irish Coffee to-go, for a brisk walk in the park.
Opened in 1893 by Irish entrepreneur Julia Herzo Quigley and her husband Antone Herzo, The Little Shamrock was initially concepted to cater to and delight blue collar workers creating Golden Gate Park directly across the street. Acquired by Saeed Ghazi in 1974, The Little Shamrock has remained a family-owned business ever since. Before passing it down to his son Tavahn Ghazi in 2004, Saeed outfitted the space with lamps and fixtures he made by hand, aiming to instill a distinct sense of place symbolizing his investment in the community and reverence for his patrons. Locals’ will say that the tunes are always on point, and the vibe is always just right.
In addition to having a strong sense of origin, the establishment has a history of resiliency – rebounding from the catastrophic 1906 earthquake with only one casualty – an antique wooden clock that now hangs in commemoration next to a sign that says “No Tick Since April 18, 1906.” The Little Shamrock has remained steady despite natural disasters and beyond. During the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake the electricity went out, but bartenders remained behind the stick pouring drinks to surely rattled patrons. For another glimpse of time gone by, the same NCR cash machine has been in use since the 1940’s in conjunction with the journeyman sensibilities of the space, The Little Shamrock is a legit vintage destination, calling from a time passed.
Join us to raise a glass to 130 years of high times and steller folks!
Cheers to 130 Years of The Little Shamrock
